  • Canon 77D vs. 80D – Which is Better?

Canon 77D vs. 80D – Which is Better?

Upon first glance, the obvious differences between the more recent [link url=”https://amzn.to/2TfOf9V”]Canon EOS 77D[/link] and the [link url=”https://amzn.to/2YMgcHB”]Canon EOS 80D[/link] may be very little. But is this really the case when you look at the different elements of the cameras? To help everyone figure it out, we took a dive deep and look at some of the differences between these two DSLR cameras.

    Summary

Below find a summary table of the various differences between the two models.  Below you can read a fuller explanation for each:

Canon EOS 80D Canon EOS 77D
    Sensor APS-C APS-C
Connectivity NFC + Wifi NFC + Wifi + Bluetooth
Battery Life 960 shots 600 shots

    Image Quality

Both the Canon 77D vs. 80D are equipped with a 24.2MP APS-C CMOS sensor and face-detect pixels included as part of their design which means that they can provide users with Canon’s famous Dual Pixel CMOS autofocus system for video focusing and live view mode even though they share the 45-point autofocus system when users are utilizing the viewfinder.

Nevertheless, the image quality is completely different as the cameras utilize different processors. The newer Canon 77D applies an updated DIGIC 7 engine processor that works together with its sensor to deliver the outcome while the older Canon 80D utilizes Canon’s DIGIC 6 processor. According to Canon, the changes in processor have improved several functionalities of the EOS 77D, which apparently can track subjects better and has become quieter at higher ISOs.

The ISO settings of the cameras are also different thanks to the change in processors with the Canon 80D spanning a native range of between ISO 100-12,800 and ISO 25,600 while the Canon 77D spans the standard range of ISO 100-25,600 with an additional ISO 51,200-equivalent setting.

    Winner: [link url=”https://amzn.to/2TfOf9V”]Canon EOS 77D[/link]

    Video Quality

Even though there are slight differences in the video quality of the two cameras, the cameras play on an almost level playing field as far as video specifications are concerned. Both cameras function with image stabilization systems that are lens-based and have the ability to capture full high definition videos up to sixty frames per second.

The image stabilization systems maintain the steadiness of videos (without ncessarily needing a steadicam/gimbal) and help keep photos crisp and sharp. However, the Canon 77D also has a five-axis digital IS system that compliments the lens-based image stabilization, particularly if a lens that lacks stabilization is used. To aid with capturing exceptional video quality, the Canon 77D has a microphone port while the 80D has both microphone and headphone sockets.

Winner (it was close): [link url=”https://amzn.to/2TfOf9V”]Canon EOS 77D[/link]

    Design and Ergonomics

    Dimensions and Weight

The dimensions of the two cameras vary with the Canon 77D being the smaller of the two cameras measuring 131.0×99.9×76.2mm a couple of millimeters smaller than the Canon 80D which measures at 139×105.2×78.5mm. The Canon 80D, which is the larger of the two cameras happens to also be the heaviest weight at 730 grams when it is fully loaded with its battery and card. The EOS 77D, on the other hand, weight just slightly over half a kilo at 540 grams.

    Accessibility

The designs of the two cameras also vary in several ways. For example, the back of the EOS 77D gives users access to certain functions such as picture style, white balance, amongst others. It also has a quick control dial around it that helps navigate the different camera settings. The difference in the design of the cameras back becomes even more evident when the cameras are placed side by side as the EOS 80D maintains the design template of previous double-digit Canon EOS models that did not have markings on the menu pad.

A major difference between the two cameras would have to be on the cameras top plate. Despite both cameras having top-plate LCD displays, the display of the EOS 80D is much larger than that of the 77D which still manages to show quite a lot of information such as top-plate illuminator, ISO and autofocus area selector options showing albeit with an overcrowded appearance

    Weather Sealing

Unlike the EOS 80D which offers weather sealing, the EOS 77D surprisingly lacks the weather sealing cap that protects it from external elements such as dust and rain.

    Winner: [link url=”https://amzn.to/2YMgcHB”]Canon EOS 80D[/link]

    Battery Life

The difference between a lot of the elements we have discussed above are quite small, but the one feature where these two cameras are nothing alike would be the batteries. The Canon 77D is can handle up to 600 shots per charge, unlike the Canon 80D which can handle a whopping 960 shots per charge.

    Winner: [link url=”https://amzn.to/2YMgcHB”]Canon EOS 80D[/link]

    Shutter Speed

The shutter speeds also vary with the EOS 80D offering better maximum shutter speeds of 1/8000 seconds in comparison to 1/4000 seconds of the Canon 77D. Additionally, the flash sync speed of the Canon 77D is much lower than that of the 80D at 1/200 seconds and 1/250 seconds, respectively.

    Burst Speed

The burst speed offered by the Canon 77D is also slower at six frames per second compared to seven frames per second and even though the likelihood that the Canon 77D can continue shooting images until the card is full which can’t be said for the Canon 80D that only manages 110 frames.

Even when shooting RAW images, the Canon 77D manages 27 frames at the exact speeds while the 80D manages 25 frames.

    Other Features

Other benefits of the Canon 80D include its pentaprism viewfinder that has an approximated frame coverage of almost 100% and 0.9x magnification compared to the 0.82x magnification and 95% coverage of the 77D.

The Canon 80D, however, lack an eye sensor which the 77D is equipped with.

Finally, both cameras have both NFC and Wi-Fi connectivity options, but the Canon 77D one-ups the 80D with the addition of inbuilt Bluetooth.

    Conclusion

Individuals who enjoy the outdoors and are into action and sports photography will find the [link url=”https://amzn.to/2YMgcHB”]Canon EOS 80D[/link] to be quite appealing thanks to its weather-resistant design, better viewfinder, faster burst rate, and sturdier battery life. Shooting in brighter sunlight also becomes easier if the Canon 80D is being used with a wider-aperture lens thanks to its high maximum shutter speeds.

Nonetheless, the [link url=”https://amzn.to/2TfOf9V”]Canon 77D[/url] has numerous benefits such as the new and improved processor, lighter weight design, broader ISO range and small size. Most people may find the Canon 77D to be quite appealing, but when all is said and done, this choice comes down to a user’s preferences and needs.

  • Canon T6 Vs. Nikon D3400 – A Complete Comparison [2020]

    Canon T6 Vs. Nikon D3400 – A Complete Comparison [2020]

    Introduction

Camera manufacturers are doing a really good job of offering devices that capture pure goodness at a reasonable standpoint. Most of the beginner DSLR cameras available today are capable of shooting RAW, have great battery life, large and improved sensors as well as lenses that can be swapped out for others making them extremely versatile.

The [link url=”https://amzn.to/2KhHykM”]Canon EOS Rebel T6[/url] and [link url=”https://amzn.to/2T8Ozr5″]Nikon D3400[/link] are two such cameras but which of the two makes for a better camera given that they have the exact price point. To find out which of the two is better, we take a deep dive into different aspects of the cameras that will hopefully help you answer the question above.

    Summary Table

For a quick summer, see our table below.  All these points are explained in more detail throughout the article:

    Canon T6 Nikon D3400
    Sensor APS-C APS-C
    Connectivity NFC + Wifi Bluetooth
Battery Life 500 shots 1200 shots
    Focus Points 9 11
    Video FPS 30 60
Camera Shots per Second 3 5
    Weight 17.1 ounces 14 ounces
    Price ~$400 ~$400
    [su_button url=”https://amzn.to/2KhHykM” background=”#ef2d38″ size=”4″ center=”yes” radius=”round” onclick=”trackOutboundLink(‘amazon’); clicky.goal( ‘119507’, null, 1 ); clicky.pause( 500 );” rel=”nofollow” target=”blank”]View Prices![/su_button] [su_button url=”https://amzn.to/2T8Ozr5″ background=”#ef2d38″ size=”4″ center=”yes” radius=”round” onclick=”trackOutboundLink(‘amazon’); clicky.goal( ‘119507’, null, 1 ); clicky.pause( 500 );” rel=”nofollow” target=”blank”]View Prices![/su_button]

    Sensors

When we compared the sensor of the two cameras, we found that the Nikon D3400 took home the crown as its sensor was better than that of the Canon T6. Both cameras have APS-C sensors which are quite large than what is usually fitted in smartphones. Because the sensor is larger, it facilitates shooting low light shots that are much better as well as enabling users to have out of focus backgrounds in their shots. The difference between the Canon T6 and Nikon D3400 is that the megapixels of the D3400 are slightly more than those of the T6 and as such photos are slightly larger and more detailed.

    Winner: [link url=”https://amzn.to/2T8Ozr5″]Nikon D3400[/link]

    Connectivity

User needs and advances in technology have resulted in connectivity options being a necessity in a lot of the devices we use today, including DSLR cameras. The Canon T6 offers its users both NFC and Wi-Fi connectivity while the D3400 offers Bluetooth connectivity.

The Bluetooth connectivity in the D3400 facilitates automatic image transfer and cloud back through the SnapBridge app; however, the files are compressed, which reduces their resolution. The lack of Wi-Fi connectivity means that users cannot transfer full-resolution files. And while Bluetooth connectivity is convenient, no one would want their beautifully shot images being compromised on, and as such we think that the Canon T6 wins on the connectivity front.

Winner: [link url=”https://amzn.to/2KhHykM”]Canon EOS Rebel T6[/url]

    Battery Life

Like with most DSLR camera’s the batteries of the T6 and D3400 are rechargeable batteries that obviously run out depending how much the camera is used. While photographers can engage in a full day’s work with both these camera’s, the D3400’s battery life can last for as long as 1200 shots while the T6 only manages to last for 500 shots. From how long the batteries last it is evident which of the two is the better camera in terms of battery performance.

    Winner: [link url=”https://amzn.to/2T8Ozr5″]Nikon D3400[/link]

    Design and Ergonomics

We had a bit of difficulty trying to compare the two cameras based on their design as they look almost alike and have pretty much the same design. Both the T6 and D3400 do not have a tilting display screen. They do however have a display screen that is not a touch screen and have a few control buttons to help users manipulate the camera’s autofocus, white balance, and ISO settings amongst others.

Unlike with other expensive cameras that have a complicated control scheme, the control scheme of the T6 and D3400 is overly simple and a delight to use. With regards to the weight and dimensions the Canon T6 is slightly larger and heavier than the Nikon weighing and measuring at 17.1 ounces and 5.8 x 3.99 x 3.06 inches in comparison to Nikon’s 14 ounces and 4.9 x 3.9 x 3.0 inches. We couldn’t choose a winner in this category, and so we leave it up to you to make that decision.

    Winner: It’s a Tie!

    Speed and Video

If you are looking for a performance from a DSLR camera, then none of these would be the ideal option as they are beginner DSLRs and as such, they are not quite speedy. However, this doesn’t mean that they’re entirely useless as they have decent burst speeds. The burst speed is indicative of the number of images that a camera can capture in one second and for the Nikon D3400 the speed is at 5fps in comparison to the T6’s 3fps. The Nikon is the clear winner when it comes to speed as it offers its users an additional two images that they can choose from in every burst.

Nikon still retains its dominance in the video category edging out the T6 with technology that delivers sixty frames per second when shooting HD video. This number is double that of Canon’s which sits at thirty frames per second. Even though 30 fps is the normal frame rate for a lot of videos the 60 fps from the Nikon means that the videos are much smoother and seamless

    Autofocus

The importance of autofocus in a camera cannot be stressed enough. A camera’s autofocus performance is more than just the number of point it has but equally about the tech specifications of the camera, which should facilitate the ability of the autofocus to work accurately.

For better autofocus accuracy, a camera autofocus point has to be plentiful. The Nikon D3400 fails to disappoint on this front with 11 autofocus points which one-up Canon’s 9 autofocus points. The two extra points in the D3400 mean that photographers have a little more wiggle room to manually position the active focus point. The Nikon D3400 has a slightly better and improved tech, which facilitates the light sensitivity that is ideal for the camera’s autofocus to function.

    Final thoughts

Both these cameras are great but, if we were to make a decision on which is the better camera based on just the specifications, then we would obviously settle for the [link url=”https://amzn.to/2T8Ozr5″]Nikon D3400[/link]. Nonetheless, there is so much more that goes into making the decision than comparing various specifications. While yes this article was about helping you figure which one between the T6 and D3400 is the better option, you could, for example, consider the T6i which compares much better to the D3400 or consider the D3500 which costs fifty dollars more but give you even better specs and features.
